Tropical Smoothie is one of my favorite takeout options, because some locations have a drive thru which is so convienient with little kids. I love that I'm still getting fresh fruit and some food that's certainly better for us than say, deep fried drive thru options. I'm also not going to be hitting up a restaurant every time my toddler wants a smoothie, so when a friend who used to work there shared this recipe with me, I made sure to write it down to make this copycat version at home. The ingredients are simple, and you don't need to freeze your fruit first- but if you have frozen that'll work too.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Simple Ingredients: We're primarily using fresh fruit here, the only other ingredients are to sweeten- plus ice and water.
  • Quick: Just blend and pour, and you're good to go!
  • Versatile: Want more blueberries? To skip the sugar? Swapping things around a bit to your tastes or what you have handy will still get you a delicious smoothie.
  • Nutritious: Since this recipe is primarilyfruit, we're getting a bunch of good stufffrom Vitamin C to dietary fiber.

Let's Get Started! Here's What You'll Need:

Ingredients:

Blueberries-The key ingredient; you can't really make a blueberry smoothie without them! Fresh blueberries or frozen will work fine- we'll just adjust the ice accordingly.

Strawberries-These surprised me as a major component, though you can swap some of them for more blueberries if you want a more blueberry forward result.

Sugar-For a true copycat you'll want to use turbinado sugar, but I'm using regular granulated sugar because it's more likely to be on hand. You can also skip it if you prefer to stick with the natural sweetness of the fruit.

Honey-We're just using a touch, but you might want a heavier hand with it if you skip the regular sugar. No honey handy? You can swap it for maple syrup instead.

Ice Cubes-If your fruit is fresh, we'll need a full cup. If the fruit is already frozen we'll just use a few cubes and replace some with it's melted counterpart- water. Even with the full cup we'll use a splash of water to help our blender get started.

Equipment:

The main thing we'll need here is our blender, but we'll want some measuring cups and spoons too. You can use a knife and cutting board to remove the green from your strawberries, or just tear them off.

How to Make This Copycat Blueberry Bliss Tropical Smoothie Recipe

Step 1: Prep Fruit

Rinse your berries, and remove the green stems from your strawberries. Peel your banana, and put all the ingredients in your blender. If you're using fresh fruit just do a splash of water- about two tablespoons or ⅛ cup to get your blender to catch. If you're using frozen fruit you can reduce the ice to ¼ cup and start with ⅓ cup water. We aren't looking to make up the whole cup of ice because ice takes up more space- in two ways since ice cubes ends have air gaps in a measuring cup, and since ice is less dense than water. Plus frozen berries tend to have a bit of extra water with them.

Step 2: Blend

Blend until you have a smooth and creamy texture, then pour into a glass. If it's too thick add about a tablespoon of water at a time and blend until you're happy with the consistency. Garnish with an extra strawberry if you have one handy and enjoy!

FAQs

Can I make this a smoothie bowl instead?

Absolutely! The main difference between drinkable smoothies and smoothie bowls is the consistency. To make a bowl, use frozen fruit and as little water as necessary to get your blender started so that the blended result will be nice and thick, perfect for eating by the spoonful. Smoothie bowls are often served with toppings too since you're not drinking it. Feel free to top yours with fresh berries, banana slices, chia seeds, granola, or some peanut or almond butter.

Can I make this smoothie ahead of time?

Smoothies don't save well in the fridge, but you can do a certain amount of prep ahead of time. My favorite way is to measure the berries ahead and keep them in the fridge in single serving containers with the sugar. That makes for one less thing to do in the morning. Another option is to blend just the fruit, sugar, and honey (no ice, and as little water as possibel). From there freeze them in ice cube trays, then just reblend with a bit of water when you're ready to enjoy them.

Can I add something to this so it's more filling?

While the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Blueberry Bliss Smoothie is just a fruit blend, in your kitchen it's your rules. To make it more creamy you could use half a cup of greek yogurt, coconut milk, or almond milk. You can also add a scoop of protein powder to give it a bit more staying power- if you use collagen, pea, or whey protein powder that even stays true to the restaurant version, since those are all optional supplements they offer.
